Life in Africa is a local organisation in Kampala, Uganda, which provides social support to Acholi refugees, displaced from the North. A collective of artisans who work individually and together to support and benefit their own community, Life in Africa is a long-standing organisation who create a wide variety of handcrafts.
We assist to fund nutrition programs for malnourished children and babies. These programs are directed and implemented by local organisations, and we assist with the costs of providing nutritional support to those referred to the program, including children with families, in foster care and/or orphaned.
For many of the children in our artisan communities, formal education and graduation is their pathway to a better future. They dream big and hope passionately for stability and security in days to come. We assist them to follow these dreams by assisting with costs of school fees, uniforms and equipment.
Health care is severely limited in many of our artisan communities, and we work with local organisations to fund and support health care costs, including providing individual families with required medical care by covering the bill, and supporting the health care centre itself with equipment and staff costs.
Our artisan communities have many individual family needs and we greatly admire their resourcefulness and compassion to assist and support each other. We assist with funding to meet many basic needs such as soap, food basics, travel and transport costs, and micro enterprise schemes and loans, on an individual basis.
The Refugee Volunteers of Izmir, Turkey, is a support network assisting Syrian families who have fled to safety in Turkey. They are primarily staffed with seasonal volunteers who spend time living and working amongst the refugee community in Izmir. They share meals, provide support and assistance, and work with families to create handcrafted items that can be sold to generate income.
Tiyamike Sewing is a non-profit, which works with vulnerable and impoverished women, teaching them sewing skills and equipping them with practical equipment so they can develop their own businesses and generate reliable, sustainable income.
Designing and handmaking earrings in Istanbul, Turkey, this talented group of displaced Syrian women are rebuilding their lives, supporting their families and learning new transferable skills. The women aim to improve their financial security and stability, and spread a message of recovery and hope for the future.
Based in Kigali, Rwanda, Cards From Africa provides employment to vulnerable people in the community, with a particular focus on people who were traumatically and significantly impacted by the genocide of 1994.
